Why Skin Care? How Beechwood Wildness came to be
Recently I was asked the question: How did I figure out what kind of business venture to focus on? Why skin care?
I loved this question so much that I decided to write an article about it. Truth is, it took me years to figure out what I wanted to do and I failed HARD at a few things before finding the right fit for me. (But that’s a story for another day….)
My focus in university was accounting. I enjoyed it because I compared the work to puzzles and I had the feeling of accomplishment whenever my spreadsheets would balance.
A few years after graduating, my feelings started to change. I jumped around to different roles trying to figure out what was missing. Finally, I realized that what was missing from these positions was the freedom to be creative. So after five years in the accounting/finance industry, I had a quarter life crises and started searching for something else.
I was first introduced to holistic nutrition while living in Calgary, AB. The dry air was hard on my hair and at the same time my skin started breaking out like crazy and I couldn’t figure out why. I started researching and came across a lot of natural products that I had never heard of before. From my research, I came to the conclusion that I had hormonal skin and that my lifestyle, skin care products and my diet, played a huge role in my breakouts.
In the past, I had been using harsh chemicals on my skin to strip away the breakouts. It never even occurred to me that what I was eating and how I was living was directly affecting my skin. Desperate to try anything, I made some lifestyle changes to balance my hormones. I started using maca root powder and eating lots of greens. I stopped using products that contained chemicals and stopped taking prescriptions that had hormones in them. I also started working on my stress management by exercising more and developing a yoga practice. It took me a full year to balance my hormones again.
Once I saw the change in my body I fell in love with holistic nutrition. I loved that I was listening to my body and figuring out WHY my breakouts were happening instead of just trying to cover it up. For the first time since university, I felt like I was solving a puzzle again, only this time it was my body, not spreadsheets.
I knew from the beginning that I wanted Beechwood Wildness to evolve into something bigger. My dream has always been to transform into a business that cultivates wholeness and educates others on how they can wildly create a holistic self care routine that works for them.
So I guess the simple answer to this question is that I chose skin care because skin care was MY starting point. I felt it fitting to start my holistic business the same way I started my holistic journey.
